History

Pretty much nothing is actually known about Tyler's childhood. What we do know is that he's the youngest of the Sons of Ipswich, and that his birthday is late in the year (I use December 10th). His parents are Rosalind and Glenn Simms and since he never received any help or concern from them through the issues with Chase (unlike Caleb), they likely aren't that close.

As far as the movie goes, the roots of the Covenant go back to 1692 during the Salem witch trials. Five families from the Ipswich Colony of Massachusetts formed a covenant of silence to protect themselves and their families from the witch hunters, speaking to no one about their powers. One family began abusing said powers, became addicted to them, and was banished from the Covenant forever.

No one knows where the Power comes from. It's not even recorded in the Book of Damnation, which has all of their family histories, important information, and the rules of the Covenant they live by. It remains in the possession of Caleb's family.

314 years after the Salem witch trials, in the year 2006, the modern day descendants of the Covenant are four teenage boys in their senior year at the prestigious Spenser Academy; Caleb, Pogue, Reid, and Tyler. Caleb is the oldest of the four, meaning he will be the first to Ascend and come into his full powers, and Tyler is the youngest. They're commonly referred to as the Sons of Ipswich because their families founded Ipswich.

On the way to a party at the dells, Reid leads the boys off a cliff, and Tyler is the first to follow his lead. At the party, they meet a new transfer student, Sarah, who's now roommates with Pogue's girlfriend Kate, and both Reid and Caleb flirt with her, though Reid's attempts fall flat. They also meet another new transfer, Chase, who intervenes in time to prevent a fight from starting between the guys and some of their classmates.

They get word that the cops are on their way to the party, and everyone books it. Chase catches a ride with Sarah and Kate, but when Sarah's car won't start, Reid jumps at the chance to fix it, still competing with Caleb for her attention. After Reid Uses his Power to fix Sarah's car, Reid boots Tyler out of the driver's seat of Tyler's car and takes over driving, despite Tyler's protests. Also, despite Caleb telling Reid they should probably pull over for the cops, they don't. Instead, they all fly Tyler's Hummer off a cliff.

Back at the school dormitories, Sarah has an incident in the showers with something spooky watching her, which scares the hell out of her. Afterwards, she runs into Reid again, who offers to take a look around the bathroom for her. After finding nothing, they part ways again.

The next day, a dead teenager is discovered at the site of where the party had been. Not only that, but a darkling uses his form to appear to Caleb, not once, but twice. The first time is when Caleb is driving, causing him to collide with a semi-truck, which he survives thanks to his Power. The second time is at night in his bedroom. There are also strong magical energies that wake up both Caleb and Pogue in the middle of the night, though neither of them know the source.

Following this, the boys go out to Nickey's bar. Reid and Tyler are playing pool, and Pogue bets with them about what kind of underwear a girl is wearing (and he wins). Chase arrives and joins Caleb and Pogue with Sarah and Kate. Reid cheats at pool while playing with the same jerk classmates from the party and gets into an argument with them. The argument is taken out back, but before it can get physical the bartender chases off the classmates.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Caleb confronts Reid and accuses him of Using too much and being the one whose Power woke him up the previous night. Reid denies the accusations, gets a little physical, and is given a display of Caleb's Power to make him back off. Instead of being reasonable, Reid insists he's just as strong as Caleb. Knowing Reid won't back down otherwise, Caleb takes him up on his challenge and kicks his ass. Tyler insists it's not right to Use on each other.

After a night at the bar, Caleb drives Sarah back to the dorms. They start a relationship, which definitely doesn't help Reid's jealousy that Caleb will be the first to Ascend, plus the fight at Nickey's. The next day there's an incident during swim practice when Chase's eyes turn black, though Caleb is the only one to witness it. Caleb tells Pogue and the two of them investigate Chase's student file, discovering that before he was adopted by the Collins family, Chase's full name was actually Goodwin Pope. The Collins died in a car crash on his eighteenth birthday.

Caleb calls a Covenant meeting, where he again questions Reid on using his Power and Reid again denies it. It turns out that Reid was telling the truth and it was Chase all along. Chase is the descendant of Goody Pope and from the family that was banished over three hundred years ago. During the meeting, Caleb gets a call from Sarah telling him Kate is in serious condition from mysterious 'insect' bites (it's actually spider bites, spiders are not insects, but that's beside the point here) and had been taken to the hospital. Pogue immediately rushes out, and on his way to Kate he's confronted by Chase, who completely thrashes Pogue, also putting him in the hospital.

Afterwards, Caleb ends up running into Chase in the Academy dormitories when he goes to see Sarah to tell her that Pogue was in an accident. Chase threatens Sarah's safety and kicks Caleb's ass. Chase was never warned about the dangers of Using too much and he's both become addicted and starting to see the damaging side effects. He wants Caleb's Power, thinking it will help him stop the side effects. After the threat, he frees Sarah from his spell and leaves. Caleb doesn't tell Sarah about anything that just happened, instead telling her that she fell asleep.

At the hospital to visit Pogue, Reid suggests going after Chase, but Caleb tells him to stay there with Tyler. Sarah is starting to figure things out, so Caleb takes her to see his father who appears ancient despite only being in his forties--proof of what happens when you abuse the Power. After that, Caleb explains everything about the Covenant, their Power, and Chase. Sarah is overwhelmed, but accepts everything she's told.

There's a school dance on the night of Caleb's eighteenth birthday, when he'll Ascend, and this is when he'll confront Chase at the old Putnam Barn. Caleb tells Reid and Tyler to take Sarah to the dance and keep her safe. Reid doesn't like the idea since he'd rather help Caleb fight Chase, but he does what he's told. Despite that, Chase still manages to kidnap Sarah and use her against Caleb.

During the fight, before and after he Ascends, Caleb can't match Chase's Power. The alternative is willing Chase his Power, which would kill Caleb, so he doesn't give up. Caleb's mother convinces his father to will Caleb his Power, and that added boost lets Caleb beat Chase. Chase vanishes into a fiery vortex, Caleb rescues Sarah from the burning barn before it collapses, Kate's condition improves, Pogue wakes up in the hospital, and everyone lives happily ever after.
